When Indian Flowers Bloomed In Distant Lands – TAPI Collection

In the 1980s, what began as a hobby for Praful and Shilpa Shah flourished into a vibrant celebration of India’s textile heritage. By 2000, the TAPI Collection had solidified its place as one of the most esteemed repositories of historic Indian textiles and art. The Shahs’ vision was simple yet profound: to honour India’s rich textile traditions and create a resource for design.

TAPI’s collection is a dazzling showcase of India’s cultural plurality, with over four thousand textiles of historical significance. It spans a breath-taking array of techniques, materials, and motifs, reflecting the intricate artistry that has defined Indian textiles for over 5000 years. These fabrics, once sought after globally, include everything from luxurious courtly brocades to vibrant cottons designed for distant markets.

Beyond textiles, TAPI also houses an impressive selection of visual arts, such as Miniatures and Company School paintings. These pieces vividly capture the essence of Indian life, from gilded temple hangings to everyday vignettes, each narrating a unique tale of artistry and culture.

The TAPI Collection invites you to immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of art, history, and tradition, offering a glimpse into the splendour of India’s textile legacy.
